*10.27.2003 - 11:27 a.m.* So, I was driving to school this morning, NPR on the radio saying this..."Next Sunday, Gene Robinson will officially become the first openly gay bishop in the history of the Episcopal Church. Robinson's supporters say the church is following God's lead, and embracing those who have been shunted to the margins. Critics fear Robinson's consecration will lead to schism." This started me thinking, once again, about gay marriage. During the summer, my Dad and I got on the topic of gay marriage. His belief is that while he wants to see civil unions have all the rights and responsibilities that a marriage has, he sees marriage as a religious union as well as a legal union. And thanks to Leviticus 18:22...well, in short, my Dad was all for civil unions, but he didn't see gay marriage as being done. Which I could understand. It made sense to me. Religion and homosexuality haven't been the best of friends in a long time. So, this was my stance on gya marriage. Until today... When I heard that on the radio, the thought struck me. If there is a schism, and the church divides, then that means that the side that supports the openly gay bishop would probably support gay marriage. A religious sect that approves of homosexuality. And a major sect at that! I know, this thought has probably occured to millions of other people, but it struck me today like an anvil. Gay marriage might not be so hard to come by. If the state recognizes that union in the new church branch, then gay marriage will be a reality. A gay union under G-d and country. Wow... I'm excited. ________________________________________________________
